Effect of Light Intensity on the Shade Selection in Ceramic Restorations – A Survey

Aim: To access the awareness amongst the general dentist about importance of intensity of light in shade selection and evaluate the intensity of light used by the general dentist using photometer. Settings and Design: Forty general dentists practicing in city of Indore, India were accessed for their awareness about the importance of intensity of light in shade selection and an evaluation was done to verify the intensity of the light source used by them in shade selection using photometer.

Material& Method: 40 Dentist practicing in the city of Indore (India) were surveyed using a questionnaire to access their awareness about the importance of intensity & source of light in shade selection. A photometer was used to measure the intensity of light source used by them for shade selection. Results: It was found that there is lack of awareness amongst the dentists regarding the importance of intensity & source of light to be used during shade selection in ceramic restoration. On evaluation by photometer it was found that 80% dentist surveyed carry out shade selection under improper intensity of light.

Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study it was concluded that intensity of light in shade selection is the most neglected part & there is a need to update the knowledge about it. There is a need for regular checkup of lightning in the dental operatory.
